Necton is the oldest company in Europe specialised in the cultivation and commercialisation of microalgae.
After several years studying microalgae, a group of young entrepreneurs established Necton in 1997. As microalgae need plenty sunlight and water, the company was set on an ideal location to grow these organisms – the natural park of Ria Formosa in the south coast of Portugal. During the years the company acquired an extensive knowledge in cultivating not only marine, but also freshwater and hypersaline species.
Biomass is nowadays produced in horizontal tubular photobioreactors and sold to various markets, mainly Aquaculture and Cosmetics. Necton’s growth is also supported by a continuous R&D effort, summing more than 30 national and European-funded research projects along the years.
